Marcel - Group Lead Software Development
"I’m proud to turn vision into action. Building a solid and inspiring organisation as a foundation for our future innovations."
What does it mean to be a Group Lead at VDL ETG T&D?
Being a Group Lead at VDL ETG T&D, to me, revolves around two key aspects: people management and technical proficiency. I guide talented individuals to excel in their roles, listen to their needs and provide them with the support they need to grow as engineers.
My responsibilities extend beyond coaching. My experience as a leader and technical know-how are essential for guiding engineers effectively. This experience also forms the foundation for creating a vision for competence development while anticipating future software development needs. This blend of leadership and technical expertise makes the role both challenging and rewarding. I am actively working within the organisation to elevate us collectively to a higher level.
The unique setup at VDL ETG combines multidisciplinary development knowledge and manufacturing craftsmanship under one roof. This enables my team to test designs, interact with machine operators, and collaborate with the assembly team. At T&D, you not only work on innovative designs but also see them come to life. This seamless connection enhances results and makes the work more engaging and fulfilling.
What key characteristics make a successful Group Lead?
As a Group Lead, I listen, coach, and empower engineers to make informed decisions, fostering personal development and motivation. Agility is essential in a dynamic environment like the one we are working in. You need to monitor operations while maintaining a long-term vision. Building further on a solid foundation, you still have the freedom and mandate to improve the organisation continuously.
Can you describe a typical day in your role as a Group Lead?
My day can be divided into three main themes.
Primarily, I focus on organisational improvements and process optimisation. This ensures that everyone can work efficiently and effectively. The close-knit culture at VDL enhances collaboration, making it easy to connect with peers and management.
Secondly, there's the crucial contact with my team. This includes both group meetings and more focused one-on-one sessions with engineers. These interactions are vital for maintaining alignment and addressing individual needs.
Finally, my day involves operational matters. This includes managing projects that need extra attention, such as resource allocation, capacity planning, and collaboration with Project Leads. Ensuring these elements run smoothly is key to our success.
I work closely with fellow Group Leads because many issues extend beyond my group. By collaborating, we can drive improvement together.
Can you share an example of how you've made an impact as a Group Lead?
My impact lies in bringing structure to a dynamic environment. I transform vision into actionable plans and demonstrate how to enhance team performance. Creating a unified vision can be challenging with many bright minds forming their own critical opinions. Having a vision is just the beginning. Delivering tangible outcomes is what truly matters, as evidence makes the vision credible.
If you believe in making an impact through streamlining and connecting, you've come to the right place. My main objective is to ensure my group accelerates and thrives, contributing to the overall growth and success of the organisation.
