INNOVATIONS FOR

THE FUTURE

The key to solving the healthcare puzzle

MAXIMUM IMPACT

At VDL ETG, we use our passion for technology and innovation to deliver high-quality components and (sub-)systems, especially for the medical industry! Together with our customers, we are shaping the future of healthcare, for better and more efficient diagnostics or treatment. We support them at every stage of the product life cycle – from concept to design, from prototype to production and from testing to maintenance. What is more, we are able to respond rapidly to the requirements and needs of our customers and the market, and achieve short lead times.

We are proud of our experience in product compliance and our ISO 13485 certification, which shows that we stand for quality and reliability.

A PRECISION WEAPON AGAINST CANCER

The use of linear proton accelerators for Image Guided Hadron Therapy (LIGHT) allows cancer patients to be treated with unprecedented precision. Proton therapy is a specific form of radiation therapy that offers patients a hopeful chance of a cure or a longer life. The accelerator shoots a beam of charged particles (protons) at nearly the speed of light towards the malignant cells. The energy of the proton beam is directed to exactly the right spot and the cancer cells are destroyed from within, without doing much damage to the surrounding healthy tissues.

The structure is 25 meters long and consists of 15 modules manufactured with micron precision by VDL ETG. Each module contains 2 tanks with a total of 1,000 accelerator plates, each with a unique design. For a stable and accurate proton beam, all these plates must meet the same high degree of shape accuracy, parallelism and surface flatness - with profile purities of less than 15 micrometers. This makes the proton accelerator the engineering masterpiece that makes the miracle of proton therapy in medicine possible.

VISUALIZATION OF PATIENTS

The FlexArm is a groundbreaking medical innovation that enables the integration of imaging techniques and precision therapy in one treatment room. Thanks to the combination of eight rotation axes and 2D and 3D imaging, it offers unparalleled capabilities for a range of clinical interventions and surgical procedures. The system guarantees stable visualization of the patient - from head to toe - even during movement. This maintains the focus of treatment, increases patient comfort during the procedure and significantly improves workflow efficiency in the treatment room.

VDL ETG's expertise in minimising movements using methods such as attenuating vibrations and flexing played a crucial role in the development of the FlexArm. Our high-end mechanical constructions are precise and reliable, as well as safe and affordable – without high costs for expensive rework. This ensures that both the X-ray source and detector can be optimally positioned, which is essential for taking reliable images and accurately targeting tissues for (radiation) therapies.
